Satyanarayan Puja Vidhi — Complete Step-by-Step Guide

Satyanarayan Puja Vidhi

Complete Step-by-Step Guide for Home · All 20 Upachara with Sanskrit Mantras
A particular kind of peace settles over a home when a Satyanarayan puja is performed properly. The flowers, the incense, the katha being read aloud, and the faces of the family gathered together all contribute to this feeling. This ritual asks something real of you and gives back something equally real.

This guide covers the complete Satyanarayan Puja Vidhi — all upachara in order, with exact Sanskrit mantras, transliterations, and meanings. A shorter 7-step track for families performing puja without a pandit is also included below.
🪔
Prefer to have it performed for you? You can book an experienced pandit who brings the samagri and leads the full vidhi.

Before the Puja — Preparation

Preparation is an intrinsic part of the puja process; it is the puja’s beginning (aarambh). What you do prior sets the tone for everything that follows.

The Day Before

The sankalp-maker should observe a partial or full fast from the previous evening. Refrain from non-sattvic foods — meat, onion, garlic, and alcohol. Spend a few quiet minutes with your intention. You will be asked to state it aloud during the sankalp; it lands differently when you’ve already thought it through.

The Morning of the Puja

Rise early. Bathe and dress in freshly washed clothes. Yellow is most auspicious — it is Lord Vishnu’s colour, associated with light, knowledge, and auspiciousness. White and cream are also appropriate. Clean the puja space thoroughly; physical cleanliness is itself a form of preparation.

Setting Up the Chowki

Place a wooden chowki covered with a clean yellow cloth. Position the idol or framed photo of Lord Satyanarayan facing west — so you sit facing east. Place the kalash to the right of the idol. Leave space in front for the puja thali, panchamrit bowl, arghya patra, and incense stand. Arrange all samagri within arm’s reach before you begin — stopping mid-puja breaks the bhaav.

The 20 Upachara — Shodashopachara Satyanarayan Puja Vidhi

Shodashopachara means ‘sixteen offerings’ — the sixteen classical categories of upachar in Hindu worship. In practice, the Satyanarayan puja expands several of those categories into distinct steps, giving us 20 upachara in the authentic sequence that traditional pandits follow.
1
Dhyanam — Meditation
Fixing the mind upon the form of Lord Satyanarayan
~3 min

Before your hands move, before a drop of water is poured or a flower offered, the puja asks you to be still. Close your eyes and hold the image: dark-complexioned, dressed in brilliant yellow, the Kaustubha gem at his chest, the mark of Shrivatsa on his form — Govinda, worshipped even by Brahma. When that image is clear and steady, open your eyes.

Dhyayet Satyam Gunatitam Gunatrayasamanvitam | Lokanatham Trilokesham Kaustubhabharanam Harim ||
Nilavarnam Pitavastram Shrivatsapadabhushitam | Govindam Gokulanandam Brahmadyairapi Pujitam ||
Meaning: I meditate on Satyanarayan — who transcends and yet encompasses the three gunas, Lord of all worlds, adorned with the Kaustubha gem, dressed in yellow, Govinda, delight of Gokula, worshipped even by Brahma himself.
2
Avahanam — Inviting the Lord
The formal invitation to Lord Satyanarayan and Goddess Lakshmi
~4 min

Form the Avahan Mudra by joining both palms and folding both thumbs inward. Hold it before the idol. Recite the mantra. The word Avahan means ‘to call forward.’ The tradition is clear: when called with genuine devotion, the Lord comes.

Om Shri Lakshmi Sahita Shri Satyanarayanam Avahayami |
Meaning: O Damodara, Lord of the universe — please come with Goddess Lakshmi. Accept this puja I have prepared. I invoke Sri Satyanarayan together with Sri Lakshmi.
3
Asanam — Offering a Seat
Welcoming the Lord as the most honoured guest
~3 min

Take five flowers in your anjali (both palms cupped together) and release them gently before the idol. The five flowers represent the five elements. The gesture says: I am welcoming you into every dimension of my life.

Transliteration
Nanaratna Samakirnam Kartasvaravibhushitam | Asanam Devadevesha! Prityartham Pratigrihyatam ||
Om Shri Satyanarayanaya Namah Asanam Samarpayami |
Meaning: O Lord of all gods — this seat, adorned with precious gems and gold, I offer with love. Please accept it.
4
Padyam — Water for the Feet
A gesture of the deepest respect
~3 min

Pour a spoonful of clean water from the panchapatra into the arghya patra while chanting the mantra. Touching or washing the feet of a revered elder is one of the deepest gestures of respect in Indian culture — it positions you as a servant before someone greater. Notice the name invoked: Narayana, the one who rescues souls from the ocean of suffering.

Transliteration
Narayanah Namasteastu Narakarnavataraka | Padyam Grihana Devesha! Mama Saukhyam Vivardhaya ||
Om Shri Satyanarayanaya Namah Padayoh Padyam Samarpayami |
Meaning: Salutations to Narayana — the one who rescues souls from the ocean of suffering. O Lord, accept this water for your feet and cause my happiness to grow.
5
Arghyam — Water for the Head
Acknowledging the consciousness within the divine form
~3 min

The mantra addresses him as Hrishikapati — master of all the senses — the one from whom all perception flows. Pour water from the panchapatra into the arghya patra. This step is the devotee saying: I know what you truly are, and I bow to that.

Transliteration
Vyaktavyaktasvarupaya Hrishikapataye Namah | Maya Nivedito Bhaktya Arghyoayam Pratigrihyatam ||
Om Shri Satyanarayanaya Namah Arghyam Samarpayami |
Meaning: Salutations to Hrishikapati — master of all senses, both manifest and unmanifest. With devotion I offer this water. Please accept it.
6
Achamaniyam — Water for Sipping
Inner purification with the waters of the Mandakini
~3 min

The water is invoked as the waters of the celestial Mandakini — pure, auspicious, and capable of washing away accumulated sin. This completes the formal welcome: the Lord has been seated, honoured at his feet and head, and now his inner purification is acknowledged.

Transliteration
Mandakinyastu Yadvari Sarvapapa Haram Shubham | Tadidam Kalpitam Deva Samyagachamyatam Vibho ||
Om Shri Satyanarayanaya Namah Achamaniyam Samarpayami |
Meaning: This water — auspicious as the Mandakini river, destroyer of all sins — O Lord, I offer it to you for your Achamana.
7
Panchamrita Snanam — The Sacred Bath
Five nectars poured in sequence over the deity
~10 min

Five substances, each with its own meaning. Milk for purity. Curd for prosperity. Ghee for strength. Honey for sweetness in all relationships. Sugar for happiness that has no bitterness. Together they form the panchamrit and are poured gently over the idol, one at a time, each with its own line of the mantra.

🌿
Do not skip: Fresh tulsi leaves, added at the very end of the mixture just before use. Lord Vishnu and tulsi are inseparable. Leaving out the tulsi from the panchamrit is the single most common error in home Satyanarayan pujas.
Transliteration
Snanam Panchamritairdeva Grihana Surasattama | Anathanatha Sarvajna Girvana Pranatapriya ||
Om Shri Satyanarayanaya Namah Panchamrita Snanam Samarpayami |
Meaning: O Lord — best among the celestials, Lord of the helpless, omniscient one — please accept this bath with the five sacred nectars.
8
Shuddhodaka Snanam — Pure Water Bath
Water gathered from every holy tirtha across India
~5 min

After the panchamrit bath, a second bath with plain clean water — invoked as gathered from every holy tirtha, carrying the sanctity of the Ganga, Yamuna, Godavari, and all sacred rivers. After pouring, gently wipe the idol dry with a clean soft cloth.

Om Shri Satyanarayanaya Namah Shuddhodaka Snanam Samarpayami |
Meaning: This water — gathered from all holy pilgrimage sites, auspicious and destroyer of all sins — O Lord, I offer it for your bath.
9
Vastram — Offering of Cloth
Participating in the care of the divine form
~4 min

A small piece of clean yellow or white cloth is offered to the Lord — symbolically dressed, honoured. Yellow is most appropriate for this puja — it is Vishnu’s colour, associated with light, knowledge, and auspiciousness.

Transliteration

Om Shri Satyanarayanaya Namah Vastra Yugmam Samarpayami |
Meaning: This garment — which protects from cold and heat, guards dignity, and adorns the body — O Lord, please accept it with love.
10
Yajnopavitam — Sacred Thread
Created by Brahma, Vishnu, and Maheshwara together
~4 min

The sacred thread — janeu — is offered as a symbol of the Lord’s divine identity. Use a yellow sacred thread. Place it before or around the idol with both hands, crossing from the left shoulder in the traditional manner.

Transliteration
Brahmavishnumaheshena Nirmitam Sutramuttamam | Grihana Bhagawan Vishno Sarveshta Phalado Bhava ||
Om Shri Satyanarayanaya Namah Yajnopavitam Samarpayami |
Meaning: O Lord Vishnu — this sacred thread, made by Brahma, Vishnu, and Maheshwara — please accept it and be the giver of all desired blessings.
11
Chandanam — Sandalwood Paste
First among the adornments — cooling and soothing
~4 min

Apply a small amount to the forehead or feet of the deity using the ring finger — never the index finger. Chandanam stands as its own step; it comes first among the adornments because it soothes the divine form before all else.

Transliteration
Shrikhandam Chandanam Divyam Gandhadhyam Sumanoharam | Vilepanam Surashreshtha Chandanam Pratigrihyatam ||
Om Shri Satyanarayanaya Namah Chandanam Samarpayami |
Meaning: O best among the celestials — this divine Shrikhand sandalwood, fragrant and beautiful — please accept it as an adornment.
12
Pushpani — Flowers
Tulsi, lotus, mogra, marigold — gathered for him alone
~5 min

Flowers are placed at the Lord’s feet with both hands, gently. Tulsi is essential, as it is in every offering to Vishnu. Beyond tulsi, lotus is most auspicious, followed by mogra (white jasmine) and marigold. What matters is that they were gathered for him, not left over from something else.

Transliteration
Malyadini Sugandhini Malatyadini Vai Prabho | Maya Hritani Pushpani Pujartham Pratigrihyatam ||
Om Shri Satyanarayanaya Namah Pushpani Samarpayami |
Meaning: O Lord — these fragrant garlands and flowers, including malati and others, I have gathered for your worship. Please accept them.
13
Dhupah — Incense
Born of forest resins — the earth’s own fragrance
~3 min

Wave the incense stick in a slow clockwise circle three times before the idol, keeping attention on the Lord’s face. The rising smoke fills the room with fragrance and signals to everyone present that something sacred is happening here.

Transliteration
Vanaspatirasodbhuto Gandhadhyo Gandha Uttamah | Aghreyah Sarvadevanam Dhupoayam Pratigrihyatam ||
Om Shri Satyanarayanaya Namah Dhupam Aghrapayami |
Meaning: This incense — born of forest essences, most fragrant of all fragrances, worthy to be received by all the gods — O Lord, please accept it.
14
Deepah — The Lamp
Light encountering light
~5 min

Light the ghee diya and wave it in a slow clockwise circle before the deity. The lamp illuminates the Lord’s face and, by reflection, the devotee’s own. Light encountering light. The mantra asks the Lord to be the giver of saukhya — well-being and happiness — to the one holding the flame.

Transliteration
Sajyam Cha Varti Samyuktam Vahnina Deepitam Maya | Deepam Grihana Devesha Mama Saukhyaprado Bhava ||
Om Shri Satyanarayanaya Namah Deepam Darshayami |
Meaning: This lamp — made with ghee and wick, lit by fire — O Lord of all lords, accept it and be the giver of happiness and well-being to me.
15
Naivedyam — The Food Offering
No one eats before the Lord has been offered food
~5 min

Prepare the sheera — semolina halwa cooked with ghee and banana — along with coconut and seasonal fruits. Wash your hands. Cover the naivedya with a clean cloth and place it before the idol. When it is finally distributed, it is no longer food — it is prasad, blessed by the Lord’s presence.

Transliteration
Ghritapakvam Havishyannam Payasam Cha Sasharkaram | Nanavidham Cha Naivedyam Grihnishva Surasattama ||
Om Shri Satyanarayanaya Namah Naivedyam Nivedayami |
Meaning: O best among the celestials — food cooked in ghee, payasam with sugar, and all these various offerings — please accept them.
16
Tambulam — Betel Leaf
A mark of respect after the meal — often skipped, but it belongs here
~3 min

After the meal, the Lord is offered paan — betel leaf prepared with clove, camphor, and cardamom. This step is almost always skipped in home pujas simply because most families don’t know it exists as a separate upachar with its own mantra. It does, and it belongs here.

Transliteration
Lavangakarpurasamyuktam Tambulam Sura Pujitam | Eladichurna Samyuktam Prityartham Pratigrihyatam ||
Om Shri Satyanarayanaya Namah Tambulam Samarpayami |
Meaning: O Lord, worshipped by all the celestials — this betel leaf prepared with clove, camphor, and cardamom — please accept it with love.
17
Phalam — Fruits
A prayer for a life that means something
~3 min

Fresh fruits are placed before the deity — bananas are traditional, along with whatever seasonal fruit is available. The mantra that accompanies this step is one of the most quietly moving in the entire puja: the devotee asks that their own life may bear fruit, not just now, but birth after birth across time.

Transliteration
Idam Phalam Maya Deva! Sthapitam Puratastava | Tena Me Saphalavaptirbhavejjanmani Janmani ||
Om Shri Satyanarayanaya Namah Phalam Samarpayami |
Meaning: O Lord, I place this fruit before you. By this act, may my life bear fruit — in this birth and in every birth to come.
18
Arartikyam — Aarti
Everything in the puja has been building toward this moment
~10 min

Light camphor in the puja thali or use a ghee lamp. Wave it clockwise before the deity — seven times is traditional. First recite the opening mantra, then sing the Satyanarayan Aarti in full. Pass the lamp to each person to receive the blessing of the light. Everyone in the room is now present together.

Transliteration
Chaturvarti Samayuktam Goghritena Cha Puritam | Arartikyamaham Kurve Pashya Me Varado Bhava ||
Om Shri Satyanarayanaya Namah Mangala-Arartikyam Samarpayami |
Meaning: With four wicks soaked in cow’s ghee I perform this aarti. O Lord, look upon me with grace and be the giver of boons.
19
Pradakshina — Circumambulation
Every step dissolving the sins of many lifetimes
~4 min

Move to the right, keeping the deity on your right side. Where the idol allows it, walk three clockwise circles with flowers in hand. In most home settings, stand before the idol and rotate clockwise in place three times. The mantra for this step is one of the most direct in the entire puja — honest accountability before the Lord.

Transliteration
Yani Kani Cha Papani Janmantara Kritani Cha | Tani Tani Vinashyantu Pradakshina Pade Pade ||
Om Shri Satyanarayanaya Namah Pradakshinam Samarpayami |
Meaning: Whatever sins I have committed in this life and in past lives — may they all be destroyed, step by step, with every step of this circumambulation.
20
Mantrapushpanjalih — The Final Offering
May Sri Vishnu be pleased
~5 min

Flowers are held in joined palms and released before the deity while the closing mantra is chanted. What makes this mantra different from everything that came before is its honesty — it acknowledges every gap in the worship just completed. And then it asks: even so, please accept it. Please make it complete. After twenty offerings, all that remains is: May Sri Vishnu be pleased.

Transliteration

Mantrahinam Kriyahinam Bhaktihinam Janardana | Yatpujitam Maya Deva Paripurnam Tadastu Me ||
Anaya Pujaya Shrivishnuh Prasidatu ||
Meaning: Whatever I offered with devotion — leaf, flower, fruit, water, food — please accept it with compassion. This worship lacked perfect mantras, perfect action, perfect devotion. Yet may your grace make it complete. May Sri Vishnu be pleased.

After the 20 Upachara — Katha, Havan, and Prasad

📖 Satyanarayan Katha

Five adhyays from the Skanda Purana, read aloud and heard by everyone present. Seat everyone before you begin. Flowers and akshat are offered after each adhyay completion. All five chapters are read in a single sitting — not split across days, not read silently. Duration: 45–60 minutes.

🔥 Havan — Fire Ritual

Included in the full vidhi only. Requires specific samagri, a havan kund, ghee, and sesame seeds — and ideally a pandit who can manage the fire safely. Each ahuti is accompanied by ‘Swaha.’ If in an apartment, check ventilation and smoke sensors before the day. Adds ~40 minutes.

🍚 Prasad Distribution and Visarjan

Distribute sheera, panchamrit, and fruits to everyone present — and to at least five neighbouring households. Pour the kalash water at the base of a tulsi plant or into a garden. Fold hands, thank the Lord for being present, and offer the visarjan — the formal farewell. That is what closes the puja.

✦ ✦ ✦

Simplified Vidhi — 7 Steps Without a Pandit

For a monthly Thursday puja, a modest home occasion, or your first attempt — this compressed version carries the same spirit with considerably less complexity. The key principle: sincerity matters more than perfection. Allow 90 minutes in total.
1

Achamana

Sip water three times, reciting Om Achyutaya Namah, Om Anantaya Namah, Om Govindaya Namah. This purifies the body and mind before approaching the deity.

2

Sankalp

Hold water and a flower in your cupped hands. Speak your name, your city, and your intention aloud. Release the water into the arghya patra. This is your vow, declared before the Lord.

3

Ganesh Puja

Place Ganesha’s image to the left. Offer a red flower and kumkum. Recite the Vakratunda shloka once. Light incense. Ask him to clear all obstacles from the puja.

4

Kalash Sthapana

Fill a brass or copper pot with clean water. Place five mango or betel leaves at the rim, a coconut on top with the tuft facing upward. Draw a swastika in kumkum on the pot. Set it on a small mound of rice.

5

Panchamrit Abhishek

Mix equal parts milk, curd, ghee, honey, and sugar. Add fresh tulsi leaves at the very end. Pour gently over the idol or image. Follow with clean water. Pat dry.

6

Satyanarayan Katha

Read all five adhyays aloud — or listen to a recording with the family seated and attentive. Offer flowers after each chapter. This cannot be shortened or done in silence.

7

Aarti and Prasad

Wave a ghee lamp clockwise before the deity. Distribute sheera, panchamrit, and fruits to all present. Pour the kalash water at the tulsi plant. Fold hands for visarjan.

✦ ✦ ✦

7 Mistakes Families Commonly Make

These come from the real experience of families hosting this puja at home — gaps that appear again and again, sometimes noticed only afterward.

Forgetting Tulsi in the panchamrit and prasad

This is the most common error in home Satyanarayan pujas. Vishnu and Tulsi are inseparable — every offering to Vishnu, including the panchamrit bath and the sheera, requires fresh Tulsi leaves. Keep them set aside specifically for this.

Facing the wrong direction

The idol faces west; the devotee sits facing east. Many families set the chowki against the east wall because it feels natural, but this reverses the direction entirely. Check this during setup, not mid-puja.

Breaking the fast before the katha ends

The fast is part of the sankalp — a vow made before the Lord. The katha itself contains stories about what happens when this vow is broken. Hold the fast until prasad is distributed. It is not long.

Skipping Tambulam and Phalam (Steps 16 and 17)

Both are authentic upachara with their own mantras. Most families skip them simply because they are not aware that these steps exist as separate offerings. They are not optional extras; they belong in the sequence.

Doing the aarti before the katha

Aarti (Step 18) comes after the katha — always. The katha is the reason for the aarti. Reversing the order because guests are waiting or children are restless misses the logic of the puja’s structure.

Cooking non-sattvic food in the kitchen on puja day

The requirement applies to the entire household, not just the puja room. Onion, garlic, or meat being cooked anywhere in the home while the puja is happening disturbs the sanctity of the space.

Reading the katha silently

The katha must be spoken aloud and heard. Reading it to yourself — even attentively — does not fulfil the tradition’s requirement. The stories need to land in people’s ears.

✦ ✦ ✦

How Different Traditions Observe This Puja

The Shodashopachara sequence is consistent across India. What shifts by region is the language of the katha, the form of prasad, and the occasions on which the puja is most commonly held.

Tradition What’s Different
North Indian Standard Shodashopachara. Aarti: Jai Lakshmiramana. Prasad: rava sheera with banana. Performed on any auspicious tithi or Purnima throughout the year.
Marathi Katha read in Marathi; antara ‘Jai Dev Jai Dev’. Prasad: sapaath — sheera with exactly five pieces of banana. Very strong Purnima observance, especially in Maharashtra households.
Bengali Rooted in the Satya Pir tradition. Often performed monthly. Prasad: sinni — a looser mixture of flour, milk, banana, and sugar, different in texture from sheera.
South Indian Reference tradition: the Annavaram Satyanarayana temple in Andhra. Emphasis on Sanskrit purity. Prasad served on a plantain leaf. Most commonly performed on Saturdays and after major family events.
Gujarati Performed frequently after marriages, business inaugurations, and house warmings. Prasad: sheera with kharek (dried dates). Often a community gathering rather than a single-family event.
Odia Strong observance particularly on Kartika Purnima. Prasad may include chuda (flattened rice) and gur (jaggery) alongside the sheera. Rural tradition very much alive.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you perform Satyanarayan Puja at home?
Follow the 7-step Simplified Vidhi: Achamana, Sankalp, Ganesh Puja, Kalash Sthapana, Panchamrit Abhishek, Satyanarayan Katha (all five adhyays, read aloud), and Aarti with prasad distribution. Allow 90 minutes in total. The full 20-step Shodashopachara with exact mantras is covered above for when a pandit is present.
How long does Satyanarayan Puja take?
The simplified 7-step vidhi without a pandit takes 90 minutes — roughly 45 minutes for the puja and 45 minutes for the katha. The full Shodashopachara with a pandit takes 2 to 2.5 hours. If the havan is included, plan for 3 to 4 hours.
What are all 20 steps of Satyanarayan Puja?
Dhyanam, Avahanam, Asanam, Padyam, Arghyam, Achamaniyam, Panchamrita Snanam, Shuddhodaka Snanam, Vastram, Yajnopavitam, Chandanam, Pushpani, Dhupah, Deepah, Naivedyam, Tambulam, Phalam, Arartikyam (Aarti), Pradakshina, and Mantrapushpanjalih. All 20 are covered in full with mantras in this guide.
How many adhyays are in the Satyanarayan Katha?
Five. All five chapters from the Skanda Purana must be read aloud and heard in a single sitting — not split across days, not read silently.
How do you make panchamrit for Satyanarayan Puja?
Mix equal parts — about 2 tablespoons each — of fresh milk, fresh curd, pure ghee, honey, and sugar. Add two or three fresh tulsi leaves at the very end, just before use. Do not add tulsi early; it turns the mixture bitter. The panchamrit serves as both the bathing liquid for the deity and, afterwards, as prasad.
What is Tambulam, and why does it matter?
Tambulam is the offering of betel leaf — prepared with clove, camphor, and cardamom — made after the food offering. It is Step 16 in the authentic Shodashopachara sequence, with its own mantra. It formally signals the end of the Lord’s meal before the closing rituals begin. Most families skip it because they are not aware it exists as a separate step. It does, and it belongs.
