Satyanarayan Puja Samagri List
Complete Items, Quantities & Where to Buy
Planning a Satyanarayan Puja at home? The one thing that stresses most families out isn’t the puja itself — it’s the shopping. Running to four different shops the day before, realising you forgot something, calling your maa or naani for the fifth time — we’ve all been there.
This is the complete Satyanarayan Puja samagri list with exact quantities for a family of 5–15 people. Go through it once, cross-check with your pandit ji if needed, and you’re set. Or, if gathering 40+ items sounds like a lot, scroll to the booking section — our packages include all of this so you don’t have to worry.
The Complete Samagri List (Organised by Purpose)
We’ve broken everything down into 7 sections. Each table tells you what to get, how much, what you can use as a substitute, and where to find it.
1. Setup Items (Puja Sthal)
These are the foundation items — for setting up the chowki and mandap before anything else.
| Item | Quantity (5–15 people) | Substitute | Where to Buy |
| Chowki (wooden low table) | 1, size 18″ × 12″ | Stool covered with cloth | Puja store, Amazon |
| Yellow cotton cloth (for chowki) | 1.25 yards | Any yellow or red cloth | Local cloth shop |
| Red/yellow cloth (for idol) | 0.5 yards | — | Cloth shop |
| Kalash (copper) | 1, 8″ tall | Steel lota | Puja store |
| Coconut with husk | 2 (1 for kalash, 1 spare) | — | Vegetable market |
| Mango leaves | 5–7 fresh | Neem or peepal leaves | Vegetable market, temple |
| Banana stem | 2 (for mandap pillars) | Mango leaf arch | Vegetable market |
| Copper Lota (small) | 2 | Steel or brass | Puja store |
| Cotton wicks (batti) | 1 pack of 50 | — | Puja store, kirana |
| Deepak / diya | 2–4 | — | Puja store |
| Matchbox | 1 | — | Kirana |
| Janeu (sacred thread) | 1 pack | — | Puja store |
| Supari (betel nut) | 11 pieces | — | Paan shop, kirana |
| Paan leaves | 5 | — | Paan shop |
2. Idol / Photo
You need at least Satyanarayan Bhagwan. Many families also place Ganesh ji and Lakshmi ji on the chowki.
| Item | Quantity | Substitute | Where to Buy |
| Satyanarayan idol or framed photo | 1 | Printed image on paper | Puja store, online |
| Ganesh ji idol or photo | 1 | — | Puja store, online |
| Lakshmi ji idol or photo | 1 | — | Puja store, online |
Tip: If you don’t own idols, a good-quality framed photo works perfectly. Just make sure it’s not a calendar cutout — get something properly framed.
3. Panchamrit Ingredients
Panchamrit is used for the abhishek (ritual bathing) of the idol. It’s made fresh on the day of puja.
| Item | Quantity | Substitute | Where to Buy |
| Milk | 250 ml | — | Dairy, any grocery |
| Curd (dahi) | 100 ml | — | Dairy |
| Pure ghee | 2 tbsp | — | Grocery |
| Honey (shehad) | 2 tbsp | Mishri syrup | Grocery |
| Sugar (cheeni) or mishri | 2 tbsp | — | Grocery |
You probably already have most of this in your kitchen.
4. Prasad Ingredients (Sheera / Panchamrit Prasad)
Satyanarayan Puja prasad is a classic suji (rava) sheera. The quantities below make enough for 15 people.
| Item | Quantity | Substitute | Where to Buy |
| Suji / rava (semolina) | 250 g | — | Grocery |
| Pure ghee | 150 g | — | Grocery |
| Sugar | 200 g | — | Grocery |
| Milk | 250 ml | — | Grocery |
| Ripe banana | 2 | — | Vegetable market |
| Mixed dry fruits (kaju, kishmish, badam) | 50 g | — | Dry fruit shop, grocery |
| Elaichi (cardamom) powder | 1 tsp | — | Kitchen |
| Tulsi leaves | 5–7 leaves | — | Home tulsi plant, temple |
Note: Tulsi is non-negotiable in the prasad — it’s what makes it prasad. Don’t skip this one.
5. Aromatic & Ritual Items
These are the items you’ll use throughout the puja — for tilak, aarti, and offerings.
| Item | Quantity | Substitute | Where to Buy |
| Haldi (turmeric) | 50 g | — | Kitchen |

| Cotton (ruaai / roui) | 1 small roll | — | Medical store, puja store |
6. Flowers & Natural Items
Fresh flowers make a huge difference to the look and feel of the puja. Don’t compromise on these.
| Item | Quantity | Substitute | Where to Buy |
| Mogra or marigold garlands | 3–5 garlands (or 5 dozen loose) | Any seasonal flowers | Flower market, florist |

| Durva grass | Small bunch | — | Temple, local market |
| Mango leaves (aamrapali) | 1 small bunch | Neem leaves | Local market |
Get flowers on the morning of puja — the fresher, the better.
7. Havan Samagri (Only If Performing Havan)
Not all Satyanarayan Pujas include a havan. Check with your pandit ji. If you are doing one, here’s what you need:
| Item | Quantity | Substitute | Where to Buy |
| Mango wood (aam ki lakdi) | 1 small bundle | — | Puja store |
| Pure ghee (for ahuti) | 250 ml minimum | — | Grocery |
| Mixed havan samagri | 200 g pack | — | Puja store, online |
| Camphor (kapur) | 1 pack | — | Puja store |
| Til seeds (sesame) | 50 g | — | Grocery, puja store |
| Navagraha samidha | 1 pack | — | Puja store |
| Havan kund | 1 | — | Puja store (rent or buy) |
Apartment safety note:
If you live in a flat, check whether your building allows havan smoke. Many high-rises have fire alarms that can trigger. Keep the kund small (9″ or 12″), ensure good cross-ventilation (open windows, switch off the kitchen hood), and keep a damp cloth nearby. Many pandit jis are experienced with apartment havans and will guide you on this.
Approximate Cost of Samagri
Without havan: Self-arranging all items typically costs ₹1,500–₹1,800 depending on your city and where you shop.
With havan: Add another ₹1000–₹1,500 for havan samagri, wood, and kund hire. Total comes to roughly ₹2,500–₹3,500.
Booking through MyPujaSetu: Our Sampoorna Vidhi and Maha packages include all puja-store items — so you skip the store runs entirely. You only arrange fresh flowers, fruits, and the prasad ingredients.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the most important samagri for Satyanarayan Puja?
If you had to pick the non-negotiables: a photo or idol of Satyanarayan Bhagwan, tulsi leaves, and the sheera prasad ingredients. Everything else supports and enriches the puja — but the bhakti and these three are the core.
Can I do Satyanarayan Puja with limited samagri?
Yes, absolutely. A simple puja with a diya, some flowers, fruit, tulsi, and the Satyanarayan Katha book is fully acceptable. The puja is about devotion. A complete samagri setup is ideal, but don’t postpone your sankalp just because you can’t arrange everything.
What’s usually included in a pre-packed Satyanarayan Puja kit?
Most store-bought kits include: roli, kumkum, akshat, agarbatti, kapur, cotton wicks, janeu, and some dry fruits. They don’t include fresh items like flowers, coconut, fruits, or prasad ingredients — you’ll need to get those separately.
How much samagri is needed for a family of 10?
The quantities in all the tables above are sized for 5–15 people. The only thing to scale proportionally is the prasad (sheera) — make a larger batch if you have more guests.
What samagri does MyPujaSetu include in the puja package?
kalash, coconut, cloth, kumkum, roli, agarbatti, dhoop, kapur, janeu, cotton wicks, and more. Fresh flowers, fruits, and prasad ingredients (Perishables; suji, ghee, sugar, milk, banana) are arranged by you — we provide the checklist so you know exactly what to get.
